Remembering Mary Gettle, A Mentor Extraordinaire

During my 65 years of volunteering with Regina Hadassah-WIZO, I had the privilege of working closely with Mary Gettle (November 18, 1919   October 22, 2006)—a mentor extraordinaire. Through our many long hours together in the kitchen, she taught me the value of hard work, helped build my confidence, and shaped my character. I remember her with heartfelt gratitude.

Mary was a lifelong member of St. George's Orthodox Cathedral and was proud of her Romanian heritage. She was a member of the Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada and was honored at the 2005 Women for Women dinner as "Our Kitchen Angel ".

Mary cherished her family, friends and her ties to the Romanian and the Jewish communities. Mary spent over 60 years in the kitchen where her skills put her head and shoulders above any ordinary chef. The Trianon, Hotel Saskatchewan, Champs and the Romanian Club are but a few of the many places that benefited from her skills.

She was happiest in the kitchen cooking up a storm of cinnamon buns, cabbage rolls, perogies, strudel and knishes for family and friends. Mary spent her whole life giving to others; "Not to worry " was her reply to anyone who asked anything of her.

I worked along side Mary and Helen Reiner for hours filling orders for a fundraiser or an event.

This experience led my to continue a small business at home.
