Harvesting Turmeric

Leon grows turmeric in a green house. The flower has no purpose but looks good.

Leon sells it to a local Natural Food Store in Asheville NC.

Leon's Garden

Leon composts the spoiled vegetables for a local store in Black Mountain NC. He shows off the insects that helps break them down. The left over grains from a Black Mountain NC brewery is then spread over the pile.

Fields of Sweet Potatoes are being harvested. The vines are cut back and rolled over to act as a cover crop for the winter months on the next patch.

Kayla drives the tractor to take the sweet potatoes to the house to be washed.

It was my job to wash the barrows of sweet potatoes.

A swarm of bees tried to settle into an empty hive, then another swarm came to see what was going on! The two groups fought for same hive. Leon said the bee had not accomplished anything so left later.

Trip to Full Circle Family Farm NC

In October Lynne, Nikki and I made a trip to visit with Leon, Geni and Kayla via Delta Flight from Calgary to Minneapolis, then boarded a flight to Charlotte NC.

Leon, with his big smile, was waiting for us when we arrived in mid afternoon. He took the back highways back to his farm. It was dark when we arrived a couple of hours later.

Geni had supper ready, with fresh baked biscuits, salad and honey squash veggie soup. Most of the ingredients were from their garden.

He showed us to our accommodations, small house with solar power hocked up to the main house. every night the full moon shone brightly through the windows.

Mediation took place every morning in a Zendo down the hill from the house.

Then Geni took us for a walk through the woods

Each day we assemble in the kitchen around the large working table learning where Leon and Geni prepared their meals.

Mushrooms diekon radishes, yakon, fresh turmeric, figs, chestnuts,  water melons
Geni washed small sweet potatoes and Lynne cut open chess nuts to go in with the sweet potatoes in the pressure cooker. When everything was done we all had a feast of the crop from Leon's garden.
He loves to explain in details the vegetables he grows and about the fermenting process.

Garlic Festival at Hester Creek Estate Winery

Randal and I took in our first Garlic Festival. We drove from Osoyoos towards Oliver BC and turned East on Road 8 to Hester Creek Estate Winery and Terafina Restaurant. In this area of the Southern Okanagan Valley there are several wineries.
We were guided to a parking spot along the vineyards where many others were already parked. From there a shuttle car drove us to the event.

We we greeted by the Garlic Festival Ambassador and an admission donation to the Oliver Elementary School's Farm to School salad bar program was welcomed.

Several vendors of garlic products, wine and BBQ food were busy with the participants.

We stopped in the patio restaurant for a snack of baggette,  liver pate and a glass of wine while we listened to live music.
My Favourite Vendor was GarlicFreak  selling an award winning premium Garlic Elixir, Preserves, Pickles, and all thing garlic. Garlic Freak produces small batch artisanal pickles, salsa, crock fermented sauerkraut, jellies, and best selling Garlic Elixir the old fashioned way. All preserves are made with organic garlic, highlighting the amazing uses of all parts of the garlic plant, and top quality fresh local Okanagan fruits and vegetables prepared within hours of harvest.

We came home with a few products and Hester Creek Character white wine.
